Stay Smart About Antibiotics

For many infections, antibiotics are not helpful, and may even cause serious side effects. – Dr. Aaron Crowser

As cold and flu season approaches, here are a couple reminders about smart antibiotic use:

  • Common infections— including colds, most cases of bronchitis, many sinus infections, and some ear infections—are caused by viruses and will not be helped by antibiotics.
  • Overuse of antibiotics leads to antibiotic-resistant infections, which are, unfortunately, on the rise. Last year alone, 23,000 people died in the U.S. from antibiotic-resistant infections.

Because there is little on the horizon with new antibiotic development, we all need to choose wisely with the antibiotics we have now— to make sure these remain effective into the future.

Your Alomere Health physician will help you ensure smart and effective antibiotic use. Thank you for your support. Stay well and we’ll be here when you need us!
