Dr. Matthew Peterson joins Urology.

Spotlight: Urologist Matthew Peterson, MD

“I grew up in this community, and it’s made me who I am. Because of that, I’m passionate about rural healthcare—and now it’s my turn to give back to the community that’s given me so much,” says Dr. Peterson.

As a child, Dr. Peterson admired how his dad—a family physician—was woven into the fabric of small-town life. “People would stop us in the grocery store or at church to thank him. Even as a kid, I could see it was a job with purpose,” he recalls.

Now, after years of training and experience across the country, Dr. Peterson is back home in Alexandria, eager to continue that tradition of care—this time bringing world-class urology expertise to Central Minnesota.

After earning his undergraduate degree in Moorhead and completing medical school in Duluth and the Twin Cities, Dr. Peterson went on to a urology residency in Buffalo, New York.

Urology is often considered a big-city specialty. I was definitely the country bumpkin of the group, but the technology we used in New York is the same we have right here in Alexandria. In fact, Alomere Health installed the da Vinci 5 robotic-assisted system BEFORE they did.

Dr. Peterson was drawn to urology because it combines technology, surgery, and long-term patient relationships. “It’s incredibly rewarding. I might diagnose a cancer, treat it surgically, and then see what same patient come back cancer-free. Urology lets us truly change lives.”

His care philosophy is simple: empower patients through education. “I want people to understand their options so they can make the decisions that feel right for them,” he explains. “My role is to guide, not pressure.”

working alongside Allen Medway, MD and Julie McDonald, PA-C, Dr. Peterson is excited to expand access to urology care across rural Minnesota—where patients often go without treatment rather than drive hours for appointments. “That’s what makes Alomere Health special,” he says. “We’re a smaller health system, but we offer big-city expertise. and I fit right in here—I see eye-to-eye with my patients because I am one of them.”
