From law enforcement to lake country.
Spotlight: Matt Wolbersen, HR Generalist
Matt Wolbersen’s path to HR was anything but straight—and that’s exactly what makes him so good at it.
Matt grew up in Alexandria, the son of the Douglas County Sheriff, and spent his early years convinced he’d follow his dad into law enforcement. He studied criminal justice at NDSU, and landed a job with the Fargo PD after graduating. But five months in, he realized the job wasn’t the right fit. “When people call the police, it’s often one of the worst days of their life,” he says. “I realized that I could better serve people in a different way.”
So Matt pivoted, took a member services coordinator role at the Fargo YMCA, and discovered something unexpected: a passion for human resources. When he saw Alomere’s Talent Acquisition Specialist posting in 2022, he applied—and moved back home to Alexandria with his wife Shiori, who was born in Singapore, grew up in California, and had never lived anywhere this small. She jumped in anyway.
It didn’t take long for them both to fall in love with the lifestyle.
For early-career healthcare professionals weighing their options, that balance is something Matt talks about openly when he’s out recruiting—along with the fact that Alomere is a Top 20 Rural Hospital with technology that tends to surprise people.
“When people hear Alexandria, Minnesota, they think paper charts. People are always surprised when they see the amazing technology we have access to.”
But what Matt comes back to most is the culture at Alomere. At large health systems, it’s easy to feel like a number. At Alomere, he says, it’s different—teammates cover for each other, leaders are accessible, and people stick around for decades because they genuinely want to. “You’re more than just a number here,” he says.
Now promoted to HR Generalist, Matt is a few weeks into his favorite new role yet: dad. Daughter Keiko Glenna arrived January 7th—her first name honoring Shiori’s Japanese grandmother, her middle name honoring Matt’s great-grandmother.
When he’s not at a career fair or reviewing applicant data, you’ll find him hunting, cheering on the Vikings, or deep in a sci-fi binge. “I’m a bit of a nerd,” he admits. “Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Stargate—I don’t share that a lot.”
It’s that mix of authenticity and heart that makes Matt a natural at what he does. He’s lived the story he tells recruits—and he means every word of it.
