Care and compassion matters.

Spotlight: Alison Chinn, MD.

Alomere Health’s newest hospitalist, Dr. Alison Chinn, has already been serving the Alexandria community for 14 years. After an eventful 2022, Dr. Chinn has transitioned to the Alomere Health hospitalist group with a renewed perspective on life and medicine.

Dr. Chinn grew up in Southwest Minnesota surrounded by healing professionals in her family. Her maternal grandfather was a local general practitioner, and her father was a veterinarian. She knew from a very young age that she wanted to follow her family’s footsteps and go into medicine.

After practicing for three years in Sioux Falls, SD, Dr. Chinn and her family moved to Alexandria in 2008, where she started as a clinical internist at the Broadway Clinic. It didn’t take long for her to realize that she wanted to put her training and experience to use treating more acutely ill patients, so Dr. Chinn became a hospitalist in 2011.

2022: A year of change.

Moving and changing jobs are significant life changes and difficult under the best of circumstances. Dr. Chinn has done both in 2022—neither voluntarily. Her prior practice group disbanded after two of her colleagues chose to pursue different career paths. At about the same time, her home was destroyed by a tornado on May 30, 2022.

With no home and a job that was ending, Dr. Chinn contemplated looking for a fresh start in a new community. However, the outpouring of support her family received after the tornado convinced her to stay in Alexandria.

That experience has also informed how she practices medicine.

I understand patients can feel very vulnerable in the hospital. Having recently lost a house and been displaced, I have a new appreciation for that feeling of vulnerability. I have and will continue to make every effort to listen well, be compassionate, and treat patients like my own family members. I feel fortunate I can continue serving the Alexandria area.
