Emergency Medicine is a family business.

Spotlight: Greg Gesell, DO

For Dr. Gesell, family bonds are important. Having grown up in the area, he was the middle child of three brothers that shared similar interests. So, when his older brother ventured into Emergency Medicine, he and his younger brother followed suit.

Dr. Gesell’s full-circle path in healthcare started at St. John’s University for his undergraduate degree, he then traveled to Missouri for his medical education, completed his residency in Michigan, and ultimately joined his younger brother back in Alexandria as Alomere Health’s Emergency Department Director. “I had a good childhood and education here. It was an easy decision to move back with my growing family,” says Gesell.

He was also pleased to see so much support from a health system the size of Alomere. “I was very impressed with the level of care at Alomere,” comments Dr. Gesell. “There is excellent staff that’s very capable, good staffing ratios, state-of-the-art technology, and specialists the Emergency Department can consult when there’s a need. In addition, I’ve found the leadership is supportive of us providers—and also committed to the community.”

Most people would assume the busiest level III trauma center in the state is a high-stress environment that can lead to burnout, but Dr. Gesell thrives in the ER. “I like the excitement and the fact that every day is different. And because there’s typically never any on-call, I can structure my time off.”

When asked what values are a good fit at Alomere, Dr. Gesell has a quick answer, “Dedicated, hard working, and willing to do what it takes to get the care the patient needs. It’s that commitment that’s so critical to the health of our department and organization. And, of course, someone who loves outdoor activities,” smiles Dr. Gesell.

When he’s not working or spending time with his wife and three children, Dr. Gesell continues to enjoy all of his childhood activities: running, hunting, fishing, and being on the water. “I’d like to stay here and finish out my career at Alomere. I’d love to have my kids experience the same childhood I had.”
