Spotlight: Dr. Anastas Provatas, Hematologist Oncologist
Alomere Cancer Center welcomes Dr. Anastas Provatas—a world-class hematologist oncologist whose expertise is matched only by the compassion he brings to each patient. Trained at some of the nation’s most respected institutions, Dr. Provatas treats blood diseases such as leukemia, myeloma, and lymphoma, along with many forms of cancer including breast, colon, kidney, and prostate.
His educational path reads like a tour through America’s top medical programs: a medical degree from the University of Connecticut, a residency at Yale, and a fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He also serves as a faculty member teaching oncology at the University of Minnesota. It’s the kind of resume you’d expect in New York or Boston—yet Dr. Provatas now chooses to practice in Alexandria, MN.
His journey to oncology began early. Raised in a close-knit Greek-American family on the East Coast, faith and science were cornerstones of his childhood. “I felt like I had two career path chices, either the priesthood or medicine,” he laughs. Initially drawn toward leukemia research, he soon discovered that lab work—though meaningful—felt isolating. Medical school, however, opened a new path.
During an oncology rotation, he connected deeply with a patient facing advanced lung cancer. Heir conversations, rooted in honesty, hope, and faith, confirmed that he had made the right decision. “I believe God gives us wisdom to do our work,” Dr. Provatas says, “I can offer medicine and science, but ultimately, He makes the final decision.” Helping patients through their most vulnerable moments confirmed that he had found his calling.
His career led him up and down the East Coast before a new opportunity brought him to northern Minnesota in 2011. He quickly fell in love with the region’s sincerity, spirituality, and straightforward kindness.
In 2025, he made another meaningful move—this time to Alexandria and the Alomere Cancer Center.
Dr. Provats brings big-city expertise to a rural region that values both excellence and heart. Patients in West Central Minnesota now have access to top-tier cancer care without ever leaving home—delivered by a physician who feels right at home among them.
