Being active is good for your body AND mind.

Terence Vanderheiden, DPM

Most people don’t think about their feet until something goes wrong. Dr. Terence Vanderheiden, Alomere Health’s podiatrist, would like to change that.

“Staying active is good for both your body and your mind,” he said. “I keep it simple. When I visit with my patients, I ask what their mobility goals are, and then try to get them back to doing that activity.”

That philosophy covers a lot of ground. On any given day, Dr. Vanderheiden might see a five-year-old with a growth plate fracture in their toe, a middle-aged runner, and an 84-year-old with an ingrown toenail. Pediatric concerns, sports injuries, arthritis, flat feet, congenital deformities, diabetic foot care—it’s all part of the practice.

Because Dr. Vanderheiden has advanced training in sports medicine, athletes at every level have a resource close to home. If a nagging Achilles is keeping you off the tennis court, or a foot injury is sidelining your season, Dr. Vanderheiden can get you back to doing what you love.

Don’t Wait Until it Hurts

The most important thing Dr. Vanderheiden wants the community to know is also the simplest: don’t ignore your feet.

A lot of things can be prevented. Seek early treatment if you're concerned about something. It's so much easier to fix a problem earlier rather than later.

A doctor in Leadership

In addition to being a clinician, Dr. Vanderheiden is also president of the Alexandria Clinic, a role he’s held since 2019. It’s a position that puts him at the intersection of patient care and organizational leadership—a bridge, as he described it, between the physicians delivering care and the administration steering the health system.

“At Alomere, physicians and senior leadership are very interdependent,” he said. “Before coming to Alomere, I worked at a large health system. I went from just being a number and having to meet a quota, to actually having a voice—and it’s not just a voice, you’re actually heard.”
