Sonja spent her first years as an RN in the pediatric ICU in Fargo, caring for critically ill kids and walking their families through complex care. In 2021, she and her husband, Derek, moved to Alexandria to be closer to family and the lakes, and she joined Alomere—first in med-surg and pediatrics, then in the ICU, and most recently in the Birth Center, caring for new moms and babies.

Her new role in Family Medicine will be supporting Dr. Wheeler and Dr. Juba in many ways in hopes of freeing up both physicians to reduce wait times for their patients.

Ask Sonja what she wants patients to know before their first visit, and her answer is immediate: “I want them to feel and know ahead of time—it’s a very non-judgemental environment. I want them to be honest. I want everyone to feel welcomed to come and see me, no matter who you are, what you look like, what your walk of life is,” she says.

When Sonja is not at work, she is usually outside. She loves to garden and be active. She and Derek travel together whenever they can, enjoy the lakes during the summer and winter, and spend time at their land. Chevy (their yellow lab) tends to be along for the ride.
